AuroraPage19: September 2003 in new dark skies. Incredible activity from a well placed coronal hole on our Sun. This weak spot in the Sun's magnetic field allowed charged solar wind to ecsape toward Earth for days at speeds of near 1000 km / second. I was waiting outside as these gusts interacted with our planet's magnetic field, and excited oxygen and nitrogen molecules in near vacuum from 100 to 1000 kilometers overhead. Nikkor 28mm lens @f1.4, Fuji NPZ 800 portrait film, and 2-5 seconds (17th) and 1/2 - 3 seconds on the 19th. |
